Salmon Fishing the Columbia

Some adventures sneak up on you...ones you didn’t even know belonged on your bucket list until you’ve lived them. That was the case for me this past weekend, when I found myself salmon fishing at Buoy 10 on the Columbia River.

We set up base in Astoria, woke before dawn, and launched out of Hammond, Oregon. The Columbia greeted us with glassy water, wide-open skies, and views that were worth the trip on their own. But once the first rod bent, I realized this outing wasn’t just about scenery, it was about the thrill of hooking fresh salmon in one of the most iconic fisheries in the Pacific Northwest.

They say 10% of anglers catch 90% of the fish. Lucky for us, we were in good hands with Daniel from St. Laurent Guide Service, who put us right where the action was. The result? Tight lines, unforgettable moments, and a new appreciation for why this fishery is so legendary.

Now I understand why salmon fishing has such a pull—it’s addictive in the best way. What started as a spontaneous trip has quickly turned into something more. I’m calling it now: this is an annual tradition in the making.
